Final Paper
Through this course, we have explored the various ways in which ideologies and practices of language come to shape different aspects of our social existence. To name a few, we explored the ways in which:
- The structure and categories of language affect our perception, understanding, and experience of the world around us
- Language-use is central to the establishment and maintenance of power-relations and hierarchies
- Language is a central aspect of identity formation
- Language practices and ideologies are central to processes of racialization and racism
- Language-use is closely related to processes of capitalism
For your final paper, explore any one of these themes to write a personal essay on the ways in which practices and ideologies of language have played an important role in shaping your social and cultural lives. As you explore these processes with respect to your own personal experiences, make sure to engage with at least three of the readings from the syllabus. You are welcome to use more than three, and to include readings from outside the syllabus.
